Actually is done manually, for every word in every language I am going to use.
I wouldn't use an automated system, cause:
1. it might slow-down the website
2. i only want certain words translated, like description
3. I don't like depending on other things that you can not control.
I used babelfish to get few words translated, and some other websites.
