SMF looks nice alright. Haven't had a chance to play around with it but what I have seen so far has been impressive. They have some nice templates available for it.

bbPress support forums for a free forum. BBpress is a Wordpress spin off. Looks very pleasent. I tried installing it on my blog domain to test it out but the installation isn't that great. The current release is the first stable release.
