Default WP as CMS

I'm trying to get a wordpress blog to display a static front page, and then have a blog behind that.

The first part works http://www.greatdomain.com is the has the static assigned page, but I am having more of a difficulty to get http://www.greatdomain.com/blog/ to just display blog posts, I've tried to have a category called blog with the appropriate post slug, but it still doesn't work for me

If I use /%category%/%postname%/ for the permalinks and I have a "blog" category. And I list all the posts being in that category. I can get the archives part, i.e. the first 60 words of the post

it seems to be a problem with using the SANDBOX theme. Time to hack the default one then
