I'd like to get some feedback as i've been playing with the idea of developing a message board from scratch using php, mysql, xml and css.
Anyone any ideas or comments?

It has been done 100 times over. Why reinvent the wheel?
If you are doing it for experience, I suggest developing something that has not been done before or something that has not much competition. That way you can make some money from it further down the line.
If you really want to create a message board, why not do it in something other than PHP?
Its purely for experiance, im looking to develop something in any of the below or even a mixture of the below languages:
PHP, CSS, mySQL, C# .NET, XML
Just can't think of any ideas!!
something original anyway. someone was looking for an opensource blog aggregator, you could try that, i think there's only one available at the moment.
fair enough. make a better one then :-)
or if the OP wanted to make some cash, write a bebo spamming script or something that would definately sell
If I were you - as someone who has been working within the PHP/MySQL field for about 10 years, I recommend you take a different route. There are simply too many crap PHP programmers out there, and I think it has damaged the language.
C# seems a better route to take. It's growing, and the people who use it are *generally* professional programmers rather than the studenty PHP types.
I'm going to be porting one of my sites - Staff - Irish Jobs - Work in Ireland - from PHP/MySQL to .NET.
Would you consider doing something similar? (e.g. a porting project?)
Dude - you could be really cool and get it working with mono![]()
