Howdo,

Im looking for an open source source social networking / cms solution that speficially caters for the following:

- profile creation
- profile customisation
- profile interactivity

Ideally, I would like it easily customisable and to be PHP based. Has anyone used any of the following / can recommend another solution:

I've used elgg in the past ... nice enough ...

None are going to be extremely easy to customise I believe .... or else they'd probably be commercial

Installed PHPizabi locally yesterday evening and its relativelystraight forward to customise in terms of style. However the features / functions will take some work customising. Its for a very specific theme, so Ill need to remove any dating like references / functions.

Installing elgg now to see what it can do.

Elgg was developed with the educational industry in mind, but can be customized for any use. Many universities throughout the world have adapted the social software to fit their needs.

Drupal is an excellent platform.

I have a demo of elgg on NevF
if anyone wants to have a go, just create an account for yourself and then when you want to try out as admin, just send me a message on it (nevf is username also) and I will make you admins galore!

Second that - Elgg etc are fine, but if you want to extend them beyond their current functionality, you'll be left at a bit of a dead end.

jomsocial was just released for joomla in the last couple of weeks - i think there is a $50 discount at the moment - had a look at it at the beta stage and it seemed pretty good

Drupal can do social networking, although it seems to be a steep enough learning curve but leaves you open to do anything else with the site as well.

open source in combination with sMash works fine. we built it for our R&D unit
