Default Social Networking Sites

Hey all,

Just curious if anyone has ever developed a Social networking site from scratch.

I'm wondering what scripting language and database ye used. Also what kinda of hosting was required.

Or any other related thingies

I'm thinking about doing one from scratch as i cant really find an app that suits.

I'm considering it as well

It'll be PHP and MySQL for me, with probably some kind of flash thingy in the middle.

Have a look at phpFoX » Trusted Social Network Solutions for a turnkey solution. I played around with it before. Its security is pretty bad. It's a nice enough script though.

Cold Fusion is not supported by that many hosts due to the licensing costs - Adobe still haven't copped onto the concept of encouraging hosting companies to support their products *sigh*

I used to work for a big jobsite who moved from a LAMP setup to MSSQL + C#. As a result their website became more stable and had speedier search results.

Now, the problem could have been the original PHP programmers were useless, but either way, I wouldn't dismiss the Microsoft route altogether...

nah your right dude, im just thinking now, but in terms of scalability and licensing, at the minute with an unproven idea im thinking no, open source GPL and open source support ala 'cathedral and bazaar'

but now you mention it, i do have one MSSQL db at me disposal... hmmm does mssql supprt transaction rollbacks?

SQL server is a nice thing to have if you have the money to shell out for a license. If not then go down the MySQL route and if your site is making you a lot of cash then you might look into the Oracle / SQL Server alternatives I think myself.

I'm currently working on a project that will include a lot of social networking features and were developing with Ruby on Rails, MySQL and deploying on Free BSD.

Microsoft changed the licensing with SQL 2005, so you can now use Express for free, though it does have limitations.
