Exclamation Some Domain Questions

Can anyone here me with some questions I have on domains

1. I forgot to renew one of my domains last week (DUH!) but when I went to it, it instead went to a domain landing - like someone had taken a claim to the domain name, and it had links to other sites on it, after contacting my hosting company, and made a payment my domain was back up and running withing an hour, what exactly happened here?

2. Is it common for people to ask for appraisals for the sale of domains, because I was asked to appraise mine, after being offered 20,000 for it, I immediately suspected someone trying to pull a fast one, when he directed me to a few sites offering these appraisals for 69 USD, assuming he owns these sites, or is somehow making a profit from them, also when he mentioned paying me as soon as possible three times, it seemed like he was pushing too much, don’t get me wrong, I know this was someone pulling a fast one, but do these appraisals actually exist?

1. - you have something like 60+ days after the domain "Expires" to get it back safetly (may be some extra redemption charges)

The domain landing was put there by your registrar - to make a quick few bux from your domain while "the process" of dying domains lasts.

Q101777: Domain Registration: Domain Expiry Process << See the table thing.

2. Sounds like someone is trying to pull a fast one alright It's cheaper to just ask someone in the know about a domain's worth... Like this forum.

Surely domain values are highly subjective so 'domain appraisal' definately sounds dodgy.

There are several companies that offer professional appraisals of domain names. It's not that subjective if you think about it.

Single word domains are worth more than multiword.
Hyphens are bad

etc., etc

Plus you've all the historical data from previous domain sales
