Default IEDR moving under Com Reg's control

Hello

As you probably know, the IEDR are not quite a Government organisation and not quite a normal company. I believe there is a law being passed / changed where the IEDR are going to come under Com Reg's control.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Is there a supposed timetable for when the change will take place?

Thanks

The law was passed in May 2007. ComReg has effective control over the policy of .ie now. Obviously this fact escaped the technology journalists.

If ComReg get directly involved I can see it becoming a mess.... though that would depend on who is involved directly.

ComReg were closely involved with the setting up of IENUM

The power to regulate the .ie TLD has already (April 2007) been granted to ComReg in the Communications Regulation (Amendment) Act 2007 Sectioin 22 (second last pdf link). The relevant Commencement Order was made in May 2007, but ComReg have not produced any regulations yet.

From my lay reading of the Act, ComReg will define the rules and select the entity who will run the .ie TLD, but not run it themselves.

Quote:
...
(3) The Commission may make regulations for the purposes of this section, but only after consul-tation with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and such other persons and public bodies (if any) as the Commission thinks appropriate.
(4) In particular, regulations under subsection (3) may do all or any of the following:
(a) specify an entity as the authority author-ised to register `.ie' domain names;
(b) prescribe the form and manner in which an application for registration or renewal of registration of an `.ie' domain name is to be made;
...

Not exactly

Replace "will" with "can" or "may"

The performance of the CV padding planks on the board of IEDR hasn't been spectacular. If it wasn't for Curtin's management and some other people in IEDR, the .ie would be doing badly. The management over the last few years has been a lot better than during the dot.bomb era. I would hate to see ComReg louse that up. Though I do disagree with some of IEDR's policies and the incompetent way that they deal with blatent cybersquatting, it has grown the ccTLD.

So ComReg is the Irish equivalent of EURid and the European Commission in one? Given its performance with Eircom and the broadband debacle, that would seem apt.

I actually think David Curtain is pretty bad. I've been trying to get porn.ie / pornography.ie for quite a while. I have repeatedly been told to write to David Curtain. I then write to him and he ignores my letters.

Basically I would like to see the supporting documentation they used when coming to the conclusion the word pornography is offensive. My assumption is that their decision is not based upon their own personal viewpoint...

I hope ComReg will drag the IEDR into the modern world.

The problem at present is that there is no "steer" "PAB" or "at large" to give feedback, debate and discussion on policy

the only people who seem to make any public statements about policy seem to have a tree hugging mentality with no real world industry experience...

You still don't get it, do you?

You will never be able to get those domains as long as Ireland remains a catholic country.

CRO don't approve of the words so you can't get the domains either

Blaming David Curtin won't solve anything, as you seem to lack a fundamental understanding of how these things work

Taking the "sure that's just the way it is" attitude is the reason there are silly problems like this rather than Ireland being any sort of Catholic country.

Wrong. I have businesses with the words "porn" and "pornography" in them.

No need to be nasty.

David Curtain is the boss. If he's not the main decision maker, who is?
