Default .com price rise

Don't forget that the prices of com/net/org/info/biz will be going up in the next few weeks

The registries are putting it up by about 50 cents, so it will depend on who you are dealing with

It will be interesting to see how those companies that have been selling on price alone will fare, as they will have to up their prices ....

I was more or less expecting there to be a backlash with some of the registrars and Directi have proven me right:

We, for one, wont be passing any increases onto customers - we'll be remaining the cheapest in Ireland

They're so cheap anyway. Now when .ie's are less than a tenner a year, then I'll be happy.

Nor I.

.ie will always be a 'premium' domain. I wouldn't foresee retail pricing of less than 20 euro for the foreseeable 3-5 years.

I can see .com being pushed up to around the $20 mark before then ...

Verisign has basically been given a license to print money by ICANN

That's also, unfortunately true. The days of the budget domain registrar are severely numbered.
