We have been talking to them and they say they can't do anything, just to re-register the domain when it drops.

This happened to me with my main money-making site a few days ago. Fortunately in my case I was able to get it back for the normal fee before it went into redemption. Google evidently wasn't impressed at seeing a domain parking page, though; my search rankings seem to have fallen dramatically. Hopefully this will recover.

If the content is good etc., it should get picked up again ...

I've had issues in the past with scripts causing indexing issues, but it's always cleared up after a while
