Default Expired Domain

I have a client whos' domain name expired a few days ago. They had registered it themselves with an english registrar.

They got no reminder or notification from the registrar to renew the domain.
The registrar immediately marked the domain for deletion. They are saying that the domain will be available back on the open market in 10 days or so, and to register it then.

I thought there was a redemption period when a domain expires for the person the renew the domain? Is there any other methods I can use to get the domain back?

Thanks

The graphic I posted is from the ICANN site and explains the life cycle of a com/net/org/info/biz domain

Other extensions work quite differently

Normally you can renew the domain with the current registrar within the first 30 days without getting hit for extra fees. If it goes past that period you can get hit for more ...

Was the domain registered directly with a registrar or via a reseller?

In any case 10 days is a silly number that they've pulled out of the air

Most registrars will screw you and take advantage of the grace period by charging some "administrative" fee to bring your domain back.

I've been hit by godaddy before for $75 (best part of 10 years of registration?) although enoms fee is a whopping $200 (glad I never got hit by that and worth about 25 years of registration)

They're passing on a cost they receive from ICANN

Thanks Blacknight for the diagram, very helpful.

The domain was registered with a large uk reseller.

The client cancelled their package with the reseller when they moved hosting to us, and because the package was cancelled the domain was deleted when it expired. We have managed to get this much information after several calls to the reseller.

I have never had this from the many hosting companies I have used in the past. Whenever I have moved hosting I always get a reminder about the domain if I have it registered with them.

Are there any rules about this from ICANN, I know this resellers registrar has a redemption period, but they say to contact the reseller directly.

If the reseller isn't playing nice you might be able to get somewhere with the registrar, though this will depend on the registrar. Which one is it?

The registrar is Schlund+Partner AG.

I've been through their website and can't see any way to contact them in regards this.
