Many years ago I purchased my first domain with Free Web Hosting and Domain Name Registration Services by Doteasy.com cause they had cheap registration and free hosting with it. Soon after I needed something better and switched to Blacknight for hosting but left the domain with Doteasy. Later when I tried to transfer the domain back to Blacknight, i was unable to do so... Apparently the reason is because to transfer a domain a confirmation email needs to be sent to the registered address on the WHOIS, but I never got the email.

When I checked the whois - the email address registered against my name is in the format of "mydomainname.com@freeprivateregistration.com" - obviously this does not belong to me - but doteasy say it does not belong to them either. However when i go to Free Web Hosting and Domain Name Registration Services by Doteasy.com - it is the doteasy.com homepage.

Can anyone tell me how I can generally change this?

You'd need to check which email address Doteasy have on their system. The email in whois sounds like it's one of those privacy service addresses. Some of those send the mail onto the real email address, but if you're not getting anything then it may not be up to date
