Default Costs of Old Domains

Am I out of touch. I came across a web site last year that was no longer in business and I just filed it away.

Then I found that it was for sale - domain name only - the content is gone, and would not have been any use anyway. I offered €100, bit low I know, but they have come back and asked for 1000.

It has no traffic, it is three years old, and has 90 links. Are they kidding? I had no real plans for it, it is just the links fitted in with a walking site of mine.

What price would you pay for old domains?

How long is a piece of string?

To date the highest figure I've paid for a single domain was about $5k

A client of outs spent 10k for a domain this week with no backlinks, no PR, no traffic. It was worth every penny.

It completely depends on what you need it for, if there is the potential for type in traffic and ESPECIALLY if there are decent keywords in the name. For PPC, quality score can be improved by having a domain with your stem words in it.

There are some domains that I can see value in - I offered 5k for one in Dec and they want 10, which it could be worth, however that has good ranking in a specific area and can be built on well.

This other one is just nothing, no key words, no traffic, nothing, I just get surprised at the value some people attach to some domains.

I can work out values for something that I can forecast income from - so I just don't know how these other values appear, blue sky?

You should keep an eye on the auctions

I'll be going to a very BIG domain auction in LA in a few days and I'm expecting some of the domains to fetch high 6 figure sums (or possibly more!)

Nice - enjoy LA.

By the way BN why did you change blog platform to MT? Do you find it much better than WP?

Thanks

You might get sick of these questions quickly - anyway.

You have 15 blogs??? Where do you get the time?

I have 10 blogs that don't do much traffic but all have PR 2 or 3, I was thinking of offering them as a paid blog service at €100 per post - that is one post to all blogs - for links of course - could have different titles and text - any thoughts?

Also you say with MT you can log in once and post from there to different domains - can you post to different domains at different hosts?

Thanks

I don't post to all of them on a regular basis. Most of the time I'm posting to 3 regularly and the rest less frequently. The reason why there are so many was to maintain focus

Other ones I'm hoping to get other people on board for ie. get a couple of other regular contributors. To date the only ones where there are at least two authors are the company blog and the ModRewrite one
