Orinovo will become famous soon enough
Default .eu price drop

EURid are about to drop the register price to €4 from Feb 1st. IMO I do not think this is a good thing for an already substantially tarnished domain, it now looks more likely to be an attractive throwaway domain for spam operators and such.

Eurid are trying very hard to promote the namespace. They also announced a couple of initiatives in recent days to encourage registrars to up their numbers. I think they're trying to copy the tactics used by DotMobi, but it doesn't seem to be working out that well for them ....

Jmcc's latest post sums it up:
Only 13.37% .eu Websites Active/Unique - .eu is a disaster zone - WhoisIreland Review

I don't know if reducing the trade price to 4 Euros is enough to kick start the ccTLD. The only thing that could restore confidence is the management of Eurid being removed from the business. And even that doesn't solve the massive problem warehoused/squatted .eu domains. People in the EU have completely lost confidence in .eu. I would not be surprised to see the morons in Eurid trying a "buy one, get one free" offer.

Heh

They actually have

They're offering registrars "points" for registrations between February and June I think (have to check in the morning!) which are automatically "redeemed" against new registrations in June or July (forget which - only skimmed the email)

Of course, as I already stated elsewhere and you have too, the only way a namespace can possibly succeed is if its adopted and used.

DotMobi have done quite a bit of work interacting with registrars, resellers and domainers and thus encouraging takeup and usage of the name. Access paramount.mobi or weather.mobi and you'll see cool and useful content for your mobile phone.
Eurid on the other hand don't seem to "get" marketing and have been relying on rather coy promo videos and printed leaflets to promote the namespace. They've also made some rather odd choices with respect to the language ie. opting for English only promotions that are meaningless for the vast majority of the target market!

One of the cleverest things that DotMobi did was that preview tool. Once you can see how your site looks on a phone display, you can begin to optimise it. It also has a more "part of the business" vibe. With Eurid there is a distinct "us and them" attitude.

A bunch of muppets who still think that MTV is what all the cool kids watch. Advertising .eu in a train station in Brussels as a prize for a promotion in the Czech Republic.

Without the German .eu market, .eu is dead. EURid screwed up the English language market with their pals in PwC. I think that .eu isn't even a third choice extension now. The Irish figures seem to be flatlining.

DotMobi's tools rock

There's no other way to put it.

They're also very active in the mobile development space and while some people may not have been too impressed with their handling of the sedo auction I still have a lot more time for them than for a lot of the other registry operators.

If the IEDR and Eurid were to learn from DotMobi there might be some real growth in both spaces!
