Default HTML Emails - Using CSS/Javascript/Flash?

I'm noticing a lot of the HTML emails I receive are still using <font> tags and tables etc.

Is it generally regarded that this still the best (safest?) method to create these emails, or should I be using css? Also, I take it javascript and Flash are a no-go area if I want to keep things a s simple as possible?

Hmm, maybe this belongs in the 'Coding Help' section...

Javascript and Flash do not belong in emails and would be blocked by a lot of email filters

That's what I was thinking alright. I had a client ask for a 'fancy' Christmas email with snow falling and all sorts and I just said no.

Anyone any thoughts on the html/css approach?

I think your options are probably:
1) Image linked to an online animated page with snow etc.
2) Animated GIF with snow falling in it, animated etc.
3) Just use style it nicely without animation

Hi,
Large numbers of web based email clients strip out all content before the <body> tag, so unless the css is contained within <p> or <td> tags, it won't be available.

<font> is still the safest, unfortunately!

Best
Sarah

That's handy to know! I wasn't aware of that.

I was building an auto newsletter that would send a load of listings from the database with photos and descriptions to subscribers. I built everything in a lovely CSS design and when I tested it in outlook, gmail, etc. it just broke completely. I went back to table design with fonts, etc. and it works fine with embedded css styles, e.g. <font style="color: #FF9900;">asdf</font>.

I'd keep with your original answer to your client... NO... you're not putting that in an email!!!!

The dumbest thing I've seen recently is when a supposed IT security site sent out its newsletter with adsense in the body!!

That really takes the biscuit!
