I've been looking around a spotted

    the iomega eGO

Amazon.com: Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 320GB Ruby Red - 34209: Electronics

anyone know an Irish website where I could pick one up or something similar....needs to be tough as old boots....

    Tough you say?

    Something to look up:

    Komplett.ie - Freecom ToughDrive 320GB USB-2 2,5"

    Komplett.ie - LaCie Rugged 160GB, 5400RPM, USB 2.0, Firewire

I got one of these myself: Komplett.ie - Western Digital Passport II 320GB,8MB USB2.0, Black
It can take a lot of abuse in a school bag.

A few other places besides komplett do stuff like that: browse their HDD sections.
    PIXMANIA
Dabs Ireland - dabs.ie- PC Hardware, Components, Software, Networking, Printers

Can't say anything about those sites though, haven't used them. I stick to trusty komplett.

I've got the passport ... from WD ... if you're looking for something go with the Lacie rugged one

If portable is the way you're going you'll be looking at the 2.5inch versions which won't go that high in size but as they aren't powered (only via usb) they can be a blessing.

read up a few reviews as well on them as you'll find there are issues with some of the laptops not being able to power them
(I'm remembering this from a friend who didn't get the passport 160gb as it had problems being powered via usb with the powerbook I believe)

I've got a WD Passport for the past year/18months and it's absolutely perfect. Using it as a backup, bringing it to parties, for client meetups.

Great size, really fast and a good price!

I actually just bought a 4gb memory key for 11 EUR I think from crucial ... got a 1gb memory key free .. (basically buy two gbs of memory from crucial.com and you get 1gb key free ...)

I'm in process of upgrading my MBP to 4gbs ...

The Passport I've found is very good ... but for some reason on the Lacie .. the rugged rubber casing would make me feel slightly more secure ... that said it increases the size a bit as well of the unit

I've ended up also slightly twisting the usb socket on mine .. its still working aok *touches wood* ...

Lacie hard drive arrived this morning......looks rugged but feels fragile.....I still wouldn't like to drop it...

Quick question......windows is automatically converting it from fat 32 to NTFS..........I'll be backing up 2x xp machines, 1 x vista ultimate 32bit and 1xPowerbook running 02 Tiger........

Is NTFS the correct way to back up all these machines....I think i'm going to run into a problem backingup the mac.....is it compatiable with NTFS?

    thanks

Macs can't write to NTFS I believe

However .. this may prove useful to you
How To: Read/write to NTFS drives on your Mac

Macs should be able to write to FAT32 though ... the limitation with FAT32 is you can't have a single file greater than 4gbs in size ... which for most people should be grand unless you've made iso backups of DVDs ?

Edit: I should have said by default
