Default NTL Broadband

I'm currently using UTV Internet for my Broadband but recently I have been plagued with dropped connections up to 7-8 times a day with the connection taking anything from 2 minutes to half an hour to come back.

Its really getting in the way of work now.

I was considering switching to NTL broadband as I know one or two people currently using it and they have given good feedback with relation to speed and reliability. The only thing is, the longest anyone I know that has it is 4 months.

As most people on here are in the internet business in some way, I figured its the right place to ask the question.

Do you have NTL Broadband and is it good!!!
Also, would you recommend it to others.

I tried NTL's (UPC) broadband recently. In my experience I found it extremely good during day time use with very fast upload and download speeds and a stable/reliable connection but after around 6pm it was the opposite and at times I struggled to get any kind of web pages loading. From what I read problems arose when they upgraded to 20mb, maybe they just need to stabilize bandwidth usage during peak hours or something.

Thanks Tom,
That's good to know as the service will only be used during office hours (9:30 to 6:00 Monday to Saturday)

After that its not a problem if it drops speed beyond 6:00pm as I won't be in using it then.

I have NTL triple play package, broadband, phone, digital t.v. through them. Can wholeheartedly recommend them, have no issues with speed at any time of day or night and I actually get the full advertised speed both up and down (checked with Mr. Neylons Irish ISP speed test - check your broadband provider's speed).

I've been using the 20MB package at home for only 2 weeks now but so far, I am REALLY impressed. Was with Eircom for 4 years before that and I feel a little silly for staying with them for so long.

Despite the bad rap UPC are getting over on boards.ie, I have already been preaching to my friends and family about it.

A friend down the road got his a few days ago and is delighted.

Be aware that they DO throttle torrents but the limit is still faster than with the 7MB from Eircom. Port forwarding is a little funny to set up (due to the modem and wireless router combo), but not difficult.

So far, I'm giving it an 8.5 out of 10. Speeds have dropped to 10MB after 6PM on occasions. Have not had to call customer service or tech support yet so cannot comment on that.

Thanks chaps
Along with putting my question up here I was also talking to a number of people who have switched and where very happy.

The only thing stopping me is them insisting on setting up a direct debit. I don't trust them with this type of thing as it’s the main reason I left them in the first place(cable TV I mean)

You should be able to set an account for manual payments unless UPC changed this for new customers since the change over. Have you contacted their customer service about this?
