I think Christmas become more materialistic than what used to be - A Holiday.
Because of that, people wouldn't have to time to use their creative imagination toward Christmas itself.

Where I came from Christmas is totally different - a real season - not full of presents for everyone that you know (friends, neighbours, etc..), it's more about family getting together, having a nice festive day, etc...
