Howdo,

Im looking for an open source source social networking / cms solution that speficially caters for the following:

- profile creation
- profile customisation
- profile interactivity

Ideally, I would like it easily customisable and to be PHP based. Has anyone used any of the following / can recommend another solution:

PHPizabi - Create Worlds
Elgg.org

Forbairt

Teaching / Designing / Developing
I've used elgg in the past ... nice enough ...

None are going to be extremely easy to customise I believe .... or else they'd probably be commercial :D

Installed PHPizabi locally yesterday evening and its relativelystraight forward to customise in terms of style. However the features / functions will take some work customising. Its for a very specific theme, so Ill need to remove any dating like references / functions.

Installing elgg now to see what it can do.

Elgg was developed with the educational industry in mind, but can be customized for any use. Many universities throughout the world have adapted the social software to fit their needs.

I have a demo of elgg on NevF
if anyone wants to have a go, just create an account for yourself and then when you want to try out as admin, just send me a message on it (nevf is username also) and I will make you admins galore!

jomsocial was just released for joomla in the last couple of weeks - i think there is a $50 discount at the moment - had a look at it at the beta stage and it seemed pretty good

Drupal can do social networking, although it seems to be a steep enough learning curve but leaves you open to do anything else with the site as well.

Hey Gav, Wanting to develop a Drupal social netowrking site in the near future but it's going to have to be a Drupa 6 site as we need to use the phpBB import module, to bring over their existing forum.

Have been reading up on a lot of Drupal social networking but seems hard o find exactly what can and can't be done in Drupal 6 as opposed to Drupal 5, which seems to have more social networking modules in place. have you any thoughts on social networking in Drupal 6?

Sorry I only just saw this reply now. Drupal 6 is quickly becoming the mature and stable version of Drupal. Drupal 6 doesn't really have any more features (in core) that Drupal 5 doesn't already have. However Drupal 6 has a better administration interface which makes tedious tasks alot easier.

Module development has caught up alot of the last few months and many of the modules that are available for 5 are now available for 6. It can be confusing because sometimes modules that are available for 5 are not available for 6 simply because they have either been moved to core or the new core version has a more elegant code base that does not require the module which was essentially a hack for Drupal 5. I hope that makes sense.

Check out the Drupal groups (organic groups) module. It allows members to create their own groups, just like on facebook.

Check out this site:
DrupalSN.com is moving to a new server!

Its currently offline for a server move apparently (so I can't get the links), but there is a page on the site that details the installed modules.

That is very nice looking & a very reasonable price.

That's the problem with Joomla though, you get the core for free but you get charged for modules such as this.

Everything in Drupal is free. :)

To each their own, but I'd rather build a social network site using Drupal than Joomla this is just one reason why.
