Yes. You can use the HEAD command if you have access to a linux machine OR you can use an online service such as Netcraft

I finally just called them.
They say its a Unix server and only supports PERL and CGI.
Are they 'having a laugh'?

They're perfectly entitled not to offer it if they don't want to... It's only another Apache module.

The client can also leave ....

These days most hosts would offer perl and php as standard.

Not offering some "funky" scripting language I could understand, but PHP or Perl?

Well I'm not going to name them but budget and expertise shouldn't be a problem. They have enough money to market themselves in Ireland and the UK. They're just being plain unhelpful.

PHP is so ubiquitous these days every host should support them

To be honest, if I was using a shared webhost for a static site where I wasn't absolutely sure that the operators were competent (and you only have to look at a web host message board to see that 99% of webhost operators are incompetent) I'd prefer that there was no PHP available to the other users on the server. Or CGI, for that matter.
