Default Logo Design - How much?

How much should you pay for a logo design?

I'm about to launch a new site which will replace a previous fiasco, so it needs a logo. I'm just not sure how much I should be paying

To give you an idea... I've paid $200 to $500 on sitepoint.com/contests and got pretty good logos done. The guys that created them were from eastern europe and did quite a good job. I have their msn and give you their details if you want.

Recently (for a project you know) I paid about €1000 for the logo design as part of a bigger job.

It depends on how much you want to spend but if you are on a budget, I'd recommend the sitepoint contests.

I'd imagine you'd be paying upwards of a grand for a decent, experienced designer in Dublin. Although it depends on what level you're looking for - Sitepoint might be a cheaper bet.

time to rethink pricing on some of the work I've done in the past

One of the best things with the sitepoint contests are the range to choose from I've never entered (though have thought about it in the past in an attempt to keep in some way sharp) but I do look at the latest contests at least once a week

Not an irish company I'd guess

given designers rates ranging from €40 - €100 euro per hour (give or take)...
that'd get you 30 minutes to 12 minutes work

To put together a custom logo in 12 to 30 minutes is crazy

To hack together pre existing elements you've got and change the text is more acceptable. You do get what you pay for so to speak.

If I'm working on "cheapish" template / logo work .. I use pre existing design elements. If was was getting paid more I'd spend a day or two working on logo examples and come up with hopefully something amazing.

I wonder how long before websites start putting up guaranteed irish signs on them (an idea I had a while back ... that said its probably already been done)

I'm sure there are some online sites you can use.

Cost me $20 I think. I did tweak it myself a little.

I've seen individuals call themselves logo designers just because they have a few trendy fonts. They literally type it up, create a suitable icon/shape and charge a modest amount based on their time. They have some happy clients but they're not designers and have no understanding of good typography. The logo may not even communicate your brand and they focus in the lower end of the market.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, most of the professional (international) agencies will charge based on their research, approach, experience etc and charge based on the value of the product to your company. How hard is that to quantify? Very difficult but there are clients paying anything from 10 to 100 K for that service.

I'm with Peter on this. Logo design is like anything else - you get what you pay for. You may get extremely lucky and find a decent logo designer who'll do a really good job for you for next to nothing but it's unlikely. Having said this, most people don't have a good eye for design so to them a logo is a logo is a logo. It might look crap to people with good aesthetic taste but the client is happy nonetheless.
