Default VPS servers and O/S upgrades

With virtual servers, not shared, who is responsible for the O/S upgrades. If I install any software obviously I am responsible but the O/S? Who patches it?

Does the providers admin team do it? It is done through whatever control panel is used? Do you have to request it or is it automatic?

If its unmanaged then you are responsible for the patching unless your contract with the host states different.

If the hosting provider is using Virtuozzo then patching is very easy.

Assuming you're talking in general, then it's usually the end user/customer. It's also usually through whatever is the norm for the distro (yum, up2date, dselect, etc.). Bigger hosts tend to have local mirrors to make it much faster, but the onus is on you, generally.
