Default Looks Like ICANN Moved On Domain Tasting

Looks like ICANN have been shamed into moving on domain tasting:

Internet Pro Radio | icann.Blog :: ICANN Ends Domain Tasting

ICANN | Preliminary Report for the Special Meeting of the ICANN Board of Directors | 23 January 2008

The resolution means that the Add Grace Period (the 5 day free period during which a domain can be deleted without charge) is gone.
However it remains to be seen when it will be implemented. Ironically it was probably Google's move against monetising domains less than five days old that made the difference.

If it is regged by one of the Dell registrars (Belgium Domains, Capitol Domains etc) then it might be tied up for the duration of the court case. But the problem is that there is no clear implementation date on this yet. It could be in a few weeks time or it could be in July.

As the resolution refers to the budget they'd probably have to pass a special budget change to implement a change before July ...

The Google move probably shamed these guys into doing something about it. There is probably a lot of political pressure being exerted over this. Still though, it goes some of the way towards fixing the problem.

There's a lot of stuff going on behind closed doors judging by some of the conversations I had with people in LA last week...

Fight Club rules though

Well the rumours of RICO potentially being applied on foot of counterfeiting charges have unsettled a lot of people and Google's move looks like a change from its usual happy clappy "do no evil" stance to one of "let's not get caught up in this". This is going to change the face of the domain business very rapidly.

Google has to answer to shareholders .....

Getting embroiled in yet another legal battle over possible IP infringement etc., would damage their stock valuation and they've already taken a hit in the last few days

ICANN also clarified the process in a press release an hour or so ago:
