Just to clarify, are you looking for a Web Designer or a Web Developer?

Not to give a round about answer :-) but if you got the technical skills and experiencedwe specified, that whats important, in here, the job titles are interchageable. if you can wear both hats, all the better.

Unfortunately it's not really about titles though. It will be very difficult to find someone who can do all of the above. You are looking for a web designer (Fireworks, Photoshop, Flash, HTML?, CSS?...) and a web developer (PHP, Javascript, CMS, MySQL, HTML?, CSS?...).

They are two different positions. If you're lucky enough to find someone who can do both I'd imagine they would be looking for a lot more money?

Sorry to post here when I'm not applying for the job but I feel it needs clarification. It's a very long list for one person to fulfill.

I'm inclined to agree with ButtermilkJack. Which is kind of why I asked the initial question.

A few pointers from someone who's been around the block a few times in this industry.
  • Almost everyone who claims to be competent designer and a competent programmer are good at neither.
  • Design and development are two completely different disciplines. Asking for a designer that can develop is similar to asking for two employees for the price of one. I can understand the business reasons for this but it's just not reasonable.
  • Having said this, there are people like this who do exist but 1) they're very thin on the ground (I don't know any in Ireland) and 2) they're likely to be very expensive (try doubling the salary). For 40k you're likely to get a poor designer with maybe decent PHP, mySQL, XML, etc. Or possibly a good designer with minimal PHP, mySQL, actionscript, etc. Essentially however, you'll end up with overall poor quality product.
  • The job description simply entails far too much - design, front-end development, server-side development, server/hosting/IT troubleshooting/support, project management, etc.
  • Why not cut out all the design stuff from the spec, hire a developer/techie and outsource the design?

Not sure I agree lads. The job spec doesn't call for an expert in programming. Wouldn't many decent designers have at least basic php/mysql? Wouldn't that be enough?

* Working to integrate the designs into CMS (Content Management Systems) and dynamic database driven websites
- doesn't take a programmer

* PHP knowledge a distinct advantage
- an advantage but not a requirement

* Experience with Java Script
I was always lead to believe that any good designer will have JS

* Ability to work with dynamic websites - especially php//MY SQL sites
- would need clarity on what "work with" means.

I know, it seems to be calling for a jack of all trades who can turn his/her hand to anything, albeit at a very low level. If a company is trying to skimp on production resources, it's a very bad thing for 1) the company, 2) their employees and 3) their clients.

I'm assuming that Gman290's boss is just an astute businessman counting his beans and I'm trying to advise him on the reality of things. That's all.

No, a decent designer will know the constraints imposed when designing dynamic, data-driven websites. From my experience, 'designers' who turn their hand to server-side scripting and RDBMS really don't know what they want to be. The best creatives I've worked with are passionate about design and don't have time to be experimenting with coding, database design, etc.

Not at a very basic level, no. Common sense though tells me that most designers wouldn't have a clue where to start and certainly wouldn't be able to extend the functionality of an open source CMS. What use is that?

That's getting a bit pedantic now TBH. The guy clearly said he's looking for a 'Web Developer/Designer'.

Why would a good designer have JS? JS has nothing to do with design. It's a client-side scripting language. Many designers do know JS... most on a very rudimentary, copy-and-paste level. I generally tell the designers I work with to concentrate on the aesthetic and not to worry about OO DOM Script, etc. and they're happy to leave it to me. The way it should be. Design for Designers, code for Developers.

I don't think there's any clarification needed TBH. It's simply a matter of a company looking for more than they can afford. It's not a criminal offence but, for their own sake, it's better to consider a different strategy. Spend your 40k on a decent Developer and outsource the design to a competent designer. Except on the off chance that you're lucky enough to find that one-in-a-million who's a s**t-hot designer AND developer who's willing to work for 40k!

Ok, fair enough, I guess we just read it different ways.

"Design for Designers, code for Developers."

Do you think though that freelancers are expected to be both, even if stronger in one discipline?

It would be an advantage (maybe?) for freelancers designers to be able to take on web projects that require a minimal amount of scripting, but those projects would be few and far between.

I'm a designer by trade and I happen to have thought myself HMTL/CSS, which is great for putting together brochure sites, but that's where I draw the line. Anything to do with JS, PHP, MySQL, ASP etc... calls for a professional coder in my opinion.

It's just too hard to be great at both. I also think they require two different personalities as well, one creative mind (designer), one academic mind (coder), but that's getting a bit deep
