| My first post here - looking forward to many great discussions!!! I wanted to start by complimenting the young student in the UK who is selling off his final pixels on his Million Dollar Homepage. www.milliondollarhomepage.com What an idea!! And what a great success it has been for him. Since august this guy has made $999,000 - with an idea most web professionals would have said - "Don't be silly, no-one will pay you for that". But low and behold his final pixels being sold on ebay here... for a whopping $140k.... You got to hold you hands up to him and say well done!!!!!!!!!! I'm just dreading the number of spin offs there will be of this site! This is a unique site - why not leave it that way! |

| I heard about this from a friend of mine too. It's difficult to imagine how he could have marketed this at the beginning. Either a world class blagger or a young man with friends in high places |

| Seems there's a whole bunch of Irish ones

| The milliondollarhomepage.com, success can be attributed in large part to what many call “The Digg Effect.” The Digg Effect occurs when a particular story gains enough votes (members deem the story as newsworthy through voting) and is promoted to the homepage. When this happens, look out. If an article moves up to the Digg homepage, it can cause tens of thousands of visitors to arrive at the Web site where the original article or news account was posted. The Digg Effect has been known to crash Web sites within hours of story being posted on Digg. Digg.com is a new media site where the members post and vote on unique stories that they find on the Internet. The site itself is about a year old but already has close to 100,000 members, and it is visited by over a million people each day to get their daily dose of unique news Lucky for Alex, a Digger (a term used for a Digg.com member) posted the press release on Digg.com. Within hours the story was promoted on the homepage of Digg.com, and Tew’s site was flooded by an estimated 40,000 visitors during the ensuing hours. Once the site reached $50,000 to $60,000 in sales, just after the The Digg Effect took place, the mainstream media published the story and took care of the rest of Milliondollarhomepages’s free advertising needs. As is the case with many unique stories, follow up articles were quickly published. Unfortnately for Alex Tew, his MillionDollarHomepage.com site took the brunt of a "major DDoS attack," and is offline he apparently didin't have TDDoS protection/prevention. The site's traffic has been reported very intense over the past few weeks, in excess of 200Mbps. Glad I didn't buy any pixels but surprised that site is not back online - maybe young Tew has gone to Bermuda with all his cash ....? |

I first saw this story on TheRegister, this was before Digg.com had it on their website. I would have thought TheRegister would have received more traffic than Digg.com (Alexa says at the time the story appeared it did, but not in the last month or so). The reason this was a success was not because it was on a website - it was simply that the idea was so outraegous, everyone was talking about it!! Hence, it got in the press!!! The press sold it from there! Tom |

As per last post - I would have thought TheRegister gets a lot more traffic than Digg.com.... I was actually surprised when Alexa shows that Digg.com has had more traffic in the last couple of months! Anyway.... |
