For which sites?

I think it might work better for some sites than others, but I could be wrong .....

Yeah - I think it works best for 'novelty' sites or sites that give stuff away...

Sorry - BIG correction needed - I get FAR fewer referrals from stumbleupon than I thought - I was including hotlinked images in my stats.. Sorry..

Heh - just read this bit about Hotlinking:

Made me chuckle (err.. just take the guy's word: don't try to find out what he replaced hotlinked images with)

:-)

He He.....

NB - I am confused now - Google analytics says I got like 17 referrals from stumbleupon - yet webaliser says I got over 100 this week (and it seems to have separate entries for people on stumbleupon who have hotlinked to my images - so I almost think I can trust this statistic??)... :-(

Does anyone else have experience of google analytics talking through its ass? (this is an appropriate word I feel after reading the above post)...

I think webaliser and analytics "interpret" logs differently.

The best thing to do is take all stats with a pinch of salt.

And remember to exclude "your" hits from your stats. Webaliser doesn't do this, while Analytics has the handy IP exclude option.

Interesting....

I just ran an analysis of yesterdays traffic through my blog using Google Analytics, Awstats, Blog Tracker and Webtrends Log Analyser.

Webtrends
Hits 3496
Pageviews 1108
Visitors 375

Google
Hits n/a
Pageviews 390
Visitors 190

Blog Tracker
Hits n/a
Pageviews 335
Visitors 176

Awstats
Hits 2652
Pageviews 556
Visitors 242

Webalizer
Hits 3578
Pageviews 998
Visitors 457

As Webtrends takes its data directly from the server log files, I would imagine it is probably the most accurate.
There are some massive discrepancies though....

Agreed - some very big discrepancies.

Some of the difference between webalizer / awstats and google analytics can be accounted for by some people not having javascript turned on (up to 10% of people I read somewhere - but I doubt it could be anywhere near even that much) - and no way could it account for THAT big a difference.

The even stranger thing is that page impressions in Adsense do not match page impressions in Google Analytics.... Are Google having a laugh??
