Default Keyword research

I'm doing some keyword research for a client but the search volumes for the selected phrases we are targetting are so low, they are not showing up in the usual keyword research applications.

This is not a case of us researching keywords with low search activities. It's more that most of these tools don't consider your keywords active if they recieve less than a few hundred queries a month.

Any ideas?

I feel your pain.

What tools have you used?

In this situation, we ask our client what they think they are. Who their competition are.

Then we find out what their main competition are targeting. Messy, but it works.

Also, if your client is targeting something so ... niche, you may considering upping it a level.
eg: If your client is selling blue widgets in Galway, why not target blue widgets?

(It's early, I hope I'm making sense).

I'm using the Google Adwords tool, Word Tracker (Pro Account), KeyWord discovery, the old Overture tool and a few more smaller players.

I agree. In this case, instead of targetting Swords Hotels etc, we are going to target Dublin Hotels and Airport Hotels etc.

We'll also do some linear stuff like optimising a page for Dublin Map, Map of Ireland etc etc.

BTW - client is not a hotel or in Ireland. Thats just an example.
