| If a website has a link on a post in a discussion forum thread (could that assist in the ranking of the website? The reason I ask being that I have just crunched in a couple of keywords and a forum thread has got a third place listing. However, when I check its google PR rank - its displaying 0/10. Does google disregard discussion forum threads? |

| Google Pagerank has nothing to do with how a site ranks for a given keyword. Well, almost nothing. And how would Google know if a page is a forum thread? (And welcome to the forum) Last edited by Redfly; 12-01-2007 at 01:43 PM. Reason: Adding Welcome |

I have no idea! So I suppose that means it doesn't then. But back to the crux of my initial posting. If I am trying to optimise my site with a particular keyword in mind - and I post a link on a forum thread that ranks highly on this keyword search - will this contribute towards my ranking in any way? |

| As a little aside, the pagerank we see in the toolbar (or any online tool) is only a snapshot that Google released. The current (last) toolbar PR export was a snapshot taken around the end of July. Google uses a constantly updating internal pagerank that we don't know and cannot see.

With regard to PR (pagerank) this is the importance google places on that page, the real trick and what you should be concentrating on is SERPS (search engine result pages) The ebook explains how to (on site and off site) optimize your web pages. Back to your question, why not use your sig on this forum as a link to your site. Notice the way redflystudios ,redcardinal and myself are using anchor text and links in the sigs of this thread . |

Excellent. As a newbie approaching the subject, I've been unsure of the logic search engines use to rank sites but will now follow this suggestion. |

| Damien That's a very valid point. The web is cluttered with sites, articles, companies, consultants etc., promising all sorts of crazy things. They tend to ignore the amount of effort involved I have several sites that have a good PR and excellent SERPS, but it didn't happen overnight. I had to work hard at it Michele

Also, in general, is it possible to determine if a forum is implementing this? |
