How do subdomains affect your site seo and the likes of Google?

Taking blacknight for example. The main domain is Irish hosting Ireland, hosting ireland / web site hosting Ireland / domain registration, dedicated servers, colocation - Blacknight Solutions: Blacknight Solutions and the blog is on a sub domain at Blacknight Blog .
Does google rank the two as one site or view them as seperate?

Then you should see that most of the Blacknight subdomains have high PR

I think it's because they are linked together, so that it's all one big website...

Actually, Google and most other search engines see subdomains as a completely different site. Just because the sites are linked together, doesn't mean they are the same site.

Sub domains are considered seperate sites.

Remember last year when google shook up it's keyword pricing and payout structure for Adsense partners and started to evaluate more closely landing pages and their content/overall value?

This was because spammers in Russian were generating server-based scripts on their domains and essentially generating thousands and thousands of MFA pages by sub domaining a single domain.

Sometimes, www.example.com and example.com are seen as different sites. A good 301 redirect should do the trick.

I think you can safely replace 'sometimes' with 'always'.
