Hi, I have a question about subdomains and links. Might be easier to explain if I use examples... www.home.com - is the main domain www.home.com/myhome - is a subdomain www.home.com/myhome2 - another subdomain All of these are on the same site and there are links to each of the subdomains on the homepage of the main domain. www.home.com/outsidehome is a seperate client site that doesn't sit on the same site as the ones above, even though it's technically a subdomain. This url redirects www.newhome.com. So my question is...will www.newhome.com (redirected from www.home.com/outseidehome) get the benefit of the internal and inbound links from www.home.com? The url says it's a subdomain even though it technically doesn't sit on the main site and there are no html links directly from the home.com homepage or anywhere on the site? Thanks in advance for any help! Last edited by SineadOD; 21-02-2007 at 11:52 AM..

First off, all the URLs you list above are subdirectories, not subdomains. If you redirect with a 301 at the server header level then *some* beneift should flow. How much? You'd have to give us some URLs.

I'd love to give you some urls but I'd like to stay a little anonymous But could you tell me what you mean by "doing a redirect from the server header level"?

As long as when someone hits the home.com/outisdehome and gets a 301 header redirecting them to outsidehome.com from the server then some value *should* pass through to the new domain. Please be careful to understand the difference between sub directory and sub domain. In this particular context they are very different beasts.

I have never been a big fan of header 301 redirects the reason being that search engines don’t really like them and don’t give credit boost to the destination site. It only really works if you use a permanent 301 redirect from your ht.access file. And as for what Red Cardinal said yes they are subdirectories on not sub domains. So be very careful in what you do because it can affect your overall status online. I have seen sights banned for this and there is not very much you can do to get out of the rut.
