Default New Domain name with 301 redirect

Hi there,

Any advice on this would be appreciated

If I changed the domain name of a website to include the relative keyword from "www.irelandservices.ie" to "www.irelandonlinemarketing.ie", is this a good idea? It's current ranking is average but not great and it has approx 50 good inbound links to the old name. I have to make a lot of seo changes to the site in general so this would just be one of the changes. Is it worth doing?

Thanks!

301 = permanent redirect
In a SEO point of view it is worth it.
You will loose the ranking for a short period of time until SE picks up all 301 redirects.
Just make sure you are doing it the right way and spend some time on this.

While KW domains seem to be getting a large boost these days that may not last, so I wouldn't make the decision simply on ranking factors.

Thanks for both replies! I think it might be worth it. I was going to do a 301 redirect from all of the old site pages to the new homepage. You mentioned "the right way to do it" though. Is this the wrong way?

It's got a lot to do with rebranding as well glengara so it seems to be the best approach all round. Well...hopefully...

maybe register a shorter domain too, like the way michele did here
irishwebmasterforum.com
iwf.ie

are the same sites, but it's much easier to give type in and tell people the 2nd one.

have both domains live.
The new one will probably have the same or similar content as the old one so the best approach is:
when the new site is up and running, add a 301 redirect to all pages from the old domain but not directly to the home page of the new site but to the pages that has the same or similar content.
At the end of the day you are just re-branding so most pages will have the same content and target.
When the new site is getting indexed by SE you can totally 301 the old site but give it a while (like few months).
