Is there best practice for creating site maps to look good visually and work well for SEO?

our existing one is here - Big Bad Wolf - 3d Visualization - Communication (web design, corporate presentations, grapich design, branding) - Illustration - Animation

but we want to improve the look of it

Do a search for sitemap.html and see what everyone else is doing. Take a look at Google's: Google Site Map

Your sitemap looks fine, although I would personally place a small intro to each high level category just so there is some descriptive content on the page rather than just links.

Also, I would go ahead and create an XML sitemap. We use Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps

I would use HTML lists and change the display using CSS.

I would also change the page title to reflect the page content. It seems you are using the same PTs across the entire site.
