Default Sitemap Question

Does the sitemap.xml need to be in the root of the www folder or can you have different sitemap.xml files in seperate folders. For example forum/sitemap.xml and blog/sitemap.xml ?

I'm getting some strange error with Google Sitemaps stating that the path i'm using for my sitemap.xml is incorrect.

Also do any other search engines offer a similar sitemap system to Google?

You can have multiple sitemaps.

Yahoo also supports a sitemap style service, though the actual format is slightly different
