Default SEO Mirror sites

What is your view on mirror sites, how would these affect and or benefit search engine rankings. Has Google and Yahoo implemented a filter, to penalize these sites. Even if they are for legitimate reasons. For example targeting a certain search engine for a specific domain name?? Would like to hear some factual pros and cons. Feel free to dive in.

Thanks.

Best bet is to noindex all your mirrored content via robots.txt.

not true fwiw.
Pages won't get PR however, and from what I have seen in a few cases, the site won't get penalised in serps if it already holds a certain position due to other factors (IBLS, keywords in domain name etc.)

I can give examples but would rather not link to the sites in question tbh.

Yeah I've noticed some anomolies myself. However usually Google will pick a primary domain and stick with that, while the other will have 0 or lower page rank and not really appear in SERPS for much, unless its very non-competitive category.

I guess it depends on what your trying to do and why? Multilingual sites are the only reason I would mirror content.
