Default google analytics filter

Hi

I'm trying to filter my IP address from google analytics but its not working. To double check my IP address I'm checking it on whatsmyipaddress.com and then entering it into the filter section. I would appreciate any tips on how I can correct this.

Thanks

er I'm not so sure that eircom gives you a fixed IP ? (I think they will but it costs extra)

I know that NTL do but thats more a case of it doesn't change than they specifically give you one.

if you're not too worried about it you could add something like
127.0.0.1 Google Analytics
To your hosts file ?

DynDNS would have been my other suggestion but I don't think it works though maybe one of the others could correct me on this

Do I understand correctly - I should use 127.0.0.1 as the IP and this will filter out my PC from google analytics.
Appreciate your help
Thanks

Hmm no, there's a file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc called 'hosts' that your PC looks at before asking for a DNS lookup.
What you're effectively doing is telling your PC that the google analytics site is hosted at 127.0.0.1 and not somewhere out on the net... you'll be filtered out of the results because you can't be counted.
I'm not sure whether this would prevent you from actually checking your analytics page though.
Are you using this method yourself Forbairt?

What I do is discount my ISP's whole IP range (roughly anyway) with a regular expression... so what ever IP I end up being assigned will be ignored in the results.
Basically take the first two octets as they are and let the last two be anything. (eg. 123.123.?.?)
If you click the "What kind of special characters can I use?" link on that page of google analytics (where you enter the IP) it'll give you a few examples of how to set this up.
It's not really ideal if you're expecting visitors who use the same ISP as you, but I'm fortunate enough in this case to be with a relatively small ISP, so the results aren't really going to be that skewed.

I went through the same thing recently. I found this really useful.
How do I exclude traffic from a range of IP addresses?

Hope it helps. If you need more help let me know and I'll see what I can do.

anyone had any luck using something like dyndns ?

I'd assume no as you don't come from myname.dyndns.com ... you come from your IP address and google probably wouldn't check to see what myname.dyndns.com resolves to ?
