Default Google Webmaster Tools - Spam Words in Site Content

Hi Everyone,
Just looking at one of my websites in the Google Webmaster Tools facility and it seems several words which I would not want Google to associate with my site appear in the results of the What Google Bot see's.

1. alcohol 2. marijuana 3. cocaine 4. effects 5. drug 6. phentermine 7. viagra 8. heroin 9. prescription12. adderall 13. hydrocodone 14. steroids 15. ambien 16. ecstasy 17. abuse 18. cialis 19. treatment 20. pharmacy 21. xanax 22. clomid 23. tylenol26. ibuprofen 27. ortho 28. effexor 29. morphine 30. vicodin 31. posts 32. testosterone 33. acid 34. dosage 35. zoloft 36. adipex
38. celebrex39. coumadin 40. tramadol 41. lsd 42. wellbutrin 43. folic
45. oxycontin 46. soma 47. drinking 48. celexa 49. drugs 50. prednisone 51. zyrtec 52. car 53. blood 54. interaction
These all appear at the top of the list. As you can see by adjacent numbers. I'm concerned my site may have been hacked, but can't see any obvious signs of this problem.

I currently run a forum which seems to be ok.

In the past I had issues with SPAM bots signing up but this is over a year ago now. I also run a wordpress blog on a subdomain which appears to have dropped in ranking lately - now that I come to think of it, this could be the problem as its an old version of Wordpress.

Is there any way I can find out what's going on here? I'm not much of a programmer myself, (I can modify code here and there).

Any suggestions? Should I be worried?

Thanks,
Gavin.

Default Just found...

Just checked to see if the subdomain was listed by Google and it appears that its not cached under the site: command.

I guess I have found the problem. Ahhhh good old open source software. Looks like some hacker has exploited the site in a subtle way (as the subdomain works) but must be trying to do some malicious activity from my server. .

Unhappy Further digging.

Further digging today revealed a problem. I set up my subdomain in Google Webmaster Tools and found a message waiting for me. It said that my site (subdomain) had been removed due to violation of Google's guidelines.

Long story short. Some spammer had managed to modify my wordpress footer.php file and insert at the bottom a huge list of links to spam sites and filled with loads of spam words.

I have now removed the violation, upgraded wordpress to 2.5.1 from 2.0.2 and set my directories on the server to 755 permissions. Lucky no further damage was done I guess.

I suspect my site will reappear in the index shortly. (For some reason I couldn't see the reinclusion link in webmaster tools under that domain).

Negative SEO at its best!

Yeah its a good one alright. I am lucky in that
a.) It wasn't a big site or anything like that. Just a hobby site.
b.) No further damage was done.
c.) It didn't affect the main site on the same domain. (Search results wise) or hacker wise. Most likely an automated script that managed it.

Its a good lesson in keeping your WP install up to date. I let it slide because I wasn't working on the site.

It was the drop off in traffic in Analytics that first indicated a problem. Then when I couldn't find the site indexed it started to come together.

As you say its great Google alerted me, however I feel sorry for those who are not in the "know" like the simple business owners.

I will probably migrate the blog to Drupal when I find the time. I am hoping to run all my websites off the 1 install and then I can only worry about managing 1 code base.

Default here is the letter from webmaster tools.

Sample of the letter from Webmaster Tools.

Dear site owner or webmaster of (insert domain name here!),

While we were indexing your webpages, we detected that some of your pages were using techniques that are outside our quality guidelines, which can be found here: Webmaster Guidelines. This appears to be because your site has been modified by a third party. Typically, the offending party gains access to an insecure directory that has open permissions. Many times, they will upload files or modify existing ones, which then show up as spam in our index.

The following is some example hidden text we found at (insert domain name here!):

The exact same thing about to me about 2 years back. Google dropped all my traffic and it wasn't until I started to look at their index that I discovered the problem.

I too feel sorry for the simple business that isnt in the know as these things can be very difficult to catch and clean up.
