Default Buying a website

Hi,

I am thinking about buying an existing website with good domain that has been around for about 10 years. It is really poorly designed has great old quality backlinks and has a lot of potential. It does really well in serps and beats a lot of other "commercially" done sites in google.

I am concerned however that if i buy it and change the layout along with a large proportion of the content along with changes to the whois records that it might get bombed out of google. Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing and what i could expect to see?

Thanks

I recently purchased a 2 year old site which is earning nice revenue and does fantastic in the serps and was worried about that too. I have purchased a few sites before but nothing this expensive. That was nearly 2 months ago and revenue is as expected and I have no change in the serps.

I suppose if you think about it, Google's algo has positioned the site highly for a reason. Meaning your content/backlinks are fine. So it still provides value to users, just because you buy the site, I don't think Google will "punish" you.

Thanks, that sounds positive. Did you change much of the content or just leave most of it as it was?

The whole site was static html. I converted it all to Wordpress and upgraded the design a small bit. I did 301 everything to it's new url and kept the existing titles and meta info.

Default Should be ok..

I would say you should be ok. Buying old websites is a great idea, especially ones that are 10 years old.

Speaking of which, where do you guys go to buy these sites? I know GoDaddy has a domain aftermarket but what about website aftermarket?

Best place I have found is sitepoint but have come across 1 or 2 in digitalpoint (very bad quality though)
