    Exclamation Geotargetted Link Building Problem

I'm trying to build links to a site which is targetted at a particular country.

Does it matter where the links come from? i.e. if the country I'm targetting was China, would links from Irish sites have a lower weight than links from other Chinese sites?

FWIW, some research I did a while ago would suggest that regional links will help a "foreign" site rank better in that particular regional Google....

This would be exactly the reason you might place on G.ie/G.co.uk for a keyword, where as on G.com or other regional ones you are way way way down the list.

So if I was promoting a site for China I'd need to get links from other Chinese sites?
(and no I'm not actually targetting China in case anyone asks )

Sure a strong link profile from the country you are targetting, coupled with some of factors mentioned in Paul's article will definitely help but quality keyword rich anchor text links are quality links no matter where they come from.

I would beg to differ here. So if I made 1000's of automatic wordpress/blogspot domains, with zero in links, even if they had great keyword anchor text, they shouldn't have a noticable effect on the serps (for keywords that actually have competition)

    That coming from experience?

I think you misread what Mickey said - "quality keyword rich anchor text links" - that to me means high-quality links, while what you describe is the creation of thousands of zero quality links. Big difference!

I looked at the top 20 for "web design" on the various English language Gs, concentrating on the international sites I noticed the same ones featured across the board with only minor ranking variations and with just one exception on G.in. This international site didn't appear in the other "English" regionals, and when I looked at its link profile it was pretty obvious it had employed an Indian linkage service. Circumstantial I know, but if I wanted to rank on a particular G I'd be looking to get at least some local links.....
