Default does page title and meta worth any thing?

    hi all

i read in a seo book that page title and meta don't work or mean very little until you have better PR?

is this true? If so, that means I should put building inbound links my first priority then?

also i have another question. in my website i sell different types of products all in one roof. like digital camera to guns etc. is it make my website difficult to get any page rank

please help me i'm new in seo

    Thanks

Page title is one of the most important factors for both SERPS and also to get the searcher to click on your website in those SERPS. So page title = one of the very most important on page SEO factors

Meta tags are wort putting in there but must less important...

Optomize your page and build links at the same time.

Google doesnt like pure product websites, write related articles and link to your products through the content...

It's not uncommon to see sites that have been up for at least a year to have a strong PageRank (like 4 or 5) despite not having any real seo programme implemented (backlinks, popularity, tags) simply because their Page Title is simply the domain name and business name (E.g. ACME Ltd). Thats because to Google the site is extremely relevent for that Page Title (due to lack of competition). If however you change the page title to the industry that ACME operates in, say "Hotel Search" - the PageRank will drop almost immediately at the next crawl. Page Title is mega-important for Google to decide which keyword index your domain should be indexed under but neither tag determines where it should rank. An example would be if you typed in "hotel search" into google - chances are the top 100 sites have the words Hotel and search in the domain name and page title. You have to consider the full 200 odd signals that Google uses (you'll find Google talking about this on it's site)

Meta tags are still important in SEO. If you setup Google webmaster tools for your site you will understand how Google treats Meta tags.

Page titles are very important for PR. Meta Tagging isn't as important as it used to be but it still carries a certain amount of weight. So I think it's better to put them in then leave them out. Page Titles are essential though

Not trying to labour a point or pick you out individually, but I've worked with PR7 and PR8 sites whose page titles have nothing to do with their industry. I've also changed these page titles on occasion from branded to non-branded word strings, and never once have I seen any change in PR. If your theory were correct then sites using marketing messages in their page titles could increase their PR by simply updating their page titles. Is this what your suggesting?

Yep, IMHO titles do matter a lot in search ranking.
