I don't think that sounds blackhat, though I could be completely wrong

This is not black-hat. Just dont write bulls*** content

As long as you refer to 3 unique sites and not all domains linking to one site...

5 websites for one business sounds too much IMHO.

You'll have 5 sites to manage so in terms of development time, cost and design etc it's quite a commitment. Sometimes I think it's better to have 1 or 2 great sites rather than 5 average ones.

I don't think anything is blackhat as long as its unique content.
I have 2 sites for my business which do have a lot of stuff which is similar but not identical. Some pages from 1 site do well on certain keywords and some from the other for other keywords.
Now if only I knew why
Anyway try and get each site to focus on one aspect of the business and optimise for that.

Default The number of domains depends on the business

If the business has 5 separate divisions or operated in a number of different regions, it might make a lot of sense to have different domains. If you were fitting and supplying car parts to both members of the public (e.g. tyres) and you were also acting as a distributor for the trade, both your trade clients and the tyre manufacturer may want you to have different sites. Also, if your fitting business also did truck testing for the DoE, you would want a separate domain too....
