I was looking at Silicon Republic's blog earlier today and noticed that all of the content seems to be reposting of articles from the main site.

Won't this have a really bad impact on their rank etc.,?

Can you actually get penalised for duplicated content?
If so it wouldn't be fare cause I have about 5-6 domains running with the same content, just different domains.
They are barely in the search engines but the main site is doing well (1600 pages in the last 2 1/2 month)

Louie you dont get penalised per se, but Google just ignores whatever it decides is duplicate. So that why your first site does ok. The others are ignored.

Other SEs have different behaviour. Yahoo! is quite similar to G, but MSN Lives! seems to be a different beast altogether.

G! probably handles 80%+ of all Irish search.

Can you actually see MSN getting anywhere?
Indeed Google is the mother of all, I find Yahoo very poor probably because of its way of doing things especially the UK one, while MSN despite of the way it spiders everything eating bandwidth like a hungry baby I find it very very poor.

But what about splogs that pull in your content and get better ranking?

They [Google] are actively identifying them for removal (not quite there yet). But what these splogs are doing is pulling in quite a lot of feeds and mixing things up to *try* to create unique pages (albeit by combining dupe content).

Generally the only page that *might* rank would be the homepage. Inner pages that would have a very high dupe ratio relative to your page would (*should*) be ignored.

Some of the splogs are even trying to process your text to make it *unique* again - change words and sentences, append sentences.
Don't see that too often in Google. Any examples? May come down to discovery - whatever Google indexes first is generally seen as original.
