Default Email vacation auto-responses. Good/Bad?

I'm just wondering if there is any way to successfully set-up a vacation message on your email without opening up the possibility of spammers getting a response from the address.

I've noticed in the past that sending an automated response just asks for trouble and a flood of spam starts arriving. This is the first auto-response I'll have to use on my new email address and I'd rather not open it up to spammers.

I'll be away for 10 days and I can't be 100% sure that I'll have access to my mail so I need some sort of message for my clients. Any suggestions?

I'm on a Mac using Thunderbird to collect my POP3 mail. I can also access my mail on the web through my hosting control panel with SquirrelMail. Any help?

I think I do... my info@ address is a catchall I think, and it forwards everything to my address. How will this effect things?

Ah, yes. Will do thanks. (EDIT: I just checked and I don't have a catch-all set-up thank god. Just a forwarder.)

But I heard that if you have an auto-responder, and a spammer sends you an email, and they are sent back a reply, it's pretty much like a verification that your address is alive and well and the spam starts flooding in. Is this true, or just an old wives' tale?

The majority of spam you see coming in would be automated using an invalid senders address or a spoofed address. Any spammer using their own email account to send/receive email needs their head checked.

Spammers would have used a reply as way to validate an address some years back but now they have better methods helping to cut down on manual work.

Personally I would not worry about it.
