Is there a simple online tool for finding out if a web site is hosted on a windows or unix environment?

You can use the netcraft website I suppose.
I usually cheat and use the HEAD command

Thanks. Hosting company just replied saying it was a Linux platform. Any php files I upload don't work - browser tried to download them instead of actually viewing them. I'll follow up. Cheers

Not all hosting companies provide PHP support - I know that sounds nuts in 2006, but it's true

your httpd.conf file mightn't be setup to parse PHP files, I've had that problem before. well dodgy, people can just download your source PHP files with all your database passwords

I've seen that happen to some prominent websites.. It's even worse when they haven't locked down MySQL properly
