    Thanks,
    It's a Windows server; I uploaded the file to the root, but can't see it, but it shows up if I do a search of the root ...Don't know what this means. I tried .htaccess file with both codes but neither worked; clearly I'm doing something wrong. I submitted a help request with my hoster so hopefullly they'll get back to me....

    On some hosts you might have to change a RewriteBase to / or some other directory, otherwise the code given by Alan looks fine.

    Ok pretty certain that .htaccess won't work on windows server, I don't have much experience on windows ones so someone here might be able to get back to you....

    Try a google search in the meantime '301 redirect windows server' - something like that

    I've just been told that my hoster, 365, doesn't allow this option of a redirect for a windows server; other hosters appear to allow this though...

    htaccess can be used on a Windows server using Helicon Tech - IIS modules and ISAPI filters for URL rewriting and search engine optimization. I have it installed on my Windows server with Web hosting Ireland, domain registration, dedicated servers, colocation - Blacknight Solutions and all works good. I think Blacknight have it by default on their shared hosting too.

    @fast1 you're welcome
