Default Student Site...Tip, Reviews etc.

Hi there,
This is my first post so hello to all

I am currently studying IT and am undertaking a personal project to setup a website with the specific intention of obtaining a respectable page rank and performing well in google searches.

My website is Dublin Computer Solutions: Providing quality, affordable Computer Solutions in South Dublin

This is a simply-designed website so please review in terms of setup for google and search engine optimisation.

Thanks for your time.

Brian

Brian,
1) it's 2008, so your copyright should reflect that
2) header image is too dark (and big)
3) image looks pixelated
4) there is no need to have the date and time on a webpage, esp. if it is done by javascript
5) try and avoild tables as much as possible
6) right click javascript is a bit unnecessary

Default welcome to the forum

Hi Brian welcome to the forum ,
I am not a big fan of unnecessary java script the no right click what are you trying to protect ?.
date and time again unnecessary java script clutter.

Pages seem to have spaces in the names not good
/Dublin%20Computer%20Solutions%20Services.html
I am sure the name is important but the search engine will give more weight to the title ,
you can use up to sixty five characters in your title make good use of it.
Your left side nav bar could be improved with the use of ordered lists instead of spans.

Robots.txt
your robots file allows all agents User-agent: * so the <meta name="robots" content="index,follow"> is superfluous
include a link to your sitemap in your robots.txt http://www.dublincomputersolutions.com/sitemap.xml

sitemap.xml
change freq = daily ,If your site is not being updated daily push this out to a month.

Over all the site has a Clean design with good navigation and clear descriptive text.
the code is a little verbose could do with a bit of a clean up.

Hey ghost,
Thanks for your response - very helpful.

With regard the javascript - was just toying around with various scripts as I was learning it - as you and Paul suggested it does not server any specific purpose to the site so I will remove it.

The spaces in the name is somthing I learnt the hard way - sorting this too.
After doing some research into SEO, google rank etc. I've come to realise the importance of the title so plan on doing some research into the popularity on google of some of my keywords and then updating and improving my use of the titles on my website. Will update the site change frequency and remove useless meta tag also.

By developing this website I'm learning new stuff all the time so appreciate both yours and Pauls opinions - these are stuff I would not have thought about so thanks a bunch guys.

Default Css Design

Your site is a simple two column design and could be much improved if you use css for lay out and formatting ,
here is a start for you , this is a remake of your left nav using css,
place this in your style sheet

#navcontainer ul { margin: 0 ;
padding: 0 ;
list-style-type: none ;
background-color: #e7dad1 ;
border-top: 1px solid #7a6c61 ;
font-weight: bold ;
width: 150px }
#navcontainer ul li { border-top: 1px solid #fcf0e4 ;
border-bottom: 1px solid #7a6c61 ;
padding: 2px 2px 2px 10px }
#navcontainer a { display: block ;
color: #000033 ;
width: 100% ;
text-decoration: none }
#navcontainer a:hover { background-color: #dedad1 ;
color: #CC0033 ;
text-decoration: none }
/*padding order top ; right ; bottom ; left */

and the html

<div id="navcontainer">
<ul>
<li><a href="#">Page One</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Page Two</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Page Three</a>
<li><a href="#">Page four</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Page five</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
