Default Depends on client.

Yeah I'll agree depends on client.
Then again I'm a suit person, not that I love them but in a professional environment I think its really important. Trust me people notice! Wearing a suit though is more than just slapping on any old suit.

Your suit should be tailored, fit well and free from obvious creases and ideally dry cleaned regularly. Shoes should be polished.

I know I sound a bit crazy, but impressions really do matter and various studies indicate that many people will judge you based on apperance more than what you are actually saying. The message here is don't give them any reason to be distracted by what your wearing or not wearing, that way they will focus more on what you're saying.

But on the flip side of that, you have guys like Richard Branson who famously don't wear suits.

To each their own, in my opinion though tech / IT guys look lazy when they just dress casually.

I think the situation is more complicated than that.
If I meet a person from a very well known company (e.g. Eircom) I will probably wear a suit but when you meet the average Joe with a small business that want a small website just for the sake of having it, dressing too smart will give the impression that is going to be expensive, but being dress to his level builds up the confidence from the start.

Sorry, but that does sound crazy - as you said

I agree, if you're going to wear a suit then wear a well made, well cut one. The 'studies indicate' thing though is absolute nonsense and doesn't work for every occasion. If you show up at a pitch for a €2,000 job in a €5,000 Saville Row suit, people are going to think you're off your banana.

There's a time to go smart casual, a time to go suited and booted and even a time to go casual.

A good rule of thumb is to dress at least one level above what your customer is wearing... hard to know before your meeting but you get used to types of clients.

Lets remember a suit isn't going to change our pricing level, so if it's a 2k job , its a 2k job. I do think smart casual or a suit. I found when I started I didnt but much effort into my dress sense when meeting the client. What I did find though was when I was casually dressed, clients would try to haggle with you more on the pricing. I think the suit gives off the more corporate vibe, and they won't try and barter your prices.
