Default who owns the site

was working on a contract and the subject of copyright has come up - typically who owns the finished site ? - i would have thought that a client would expect to own his or her site, but is this the case, or does it vary ?

Hi Byron

Yep, I have it my contract that I own the copyright to the design too. Almost without fail, the client asks about that part of the contract.

Here's an article from sitepoint on the subject;

Who Owns the Copyright to Your Website? [Legal Issues]

Hi Jennifer,

How does that usually go - do they have a problem with not owning the copyright?

Interesting article, cheers.

The contract I use transfers copyright ownership of the design to the client. Any scripts / software involved is licensed to them for their use, but they are not allowed to pass them on.

Hi Dav

I think most people who ask are afraid that I will use the design for their website on 50 more websites, so I write in the contract that it is a once-off and will not be used again - but I still own the copyright.
