What is "cool" these days?

depends what you need. scripts.com has a bunch, but if you want something more custom it is always better to start from scratch.

Well I want something that is functional and uses static URLs

not a big fan of out-of-the box scripts, but if you are looking for a simple cheap solution there are also some wordpress themes that should do the job.

Haven't used it myself but I see a lot of classified sites use Classipress, which is a Wordpress theme akaik

I have used Classipress. I would for defo recommend it. It aint free but it is good.

I dont have any working examples up at the moment to point to... but will shortly.

Classipress is a great script to work with its not free but very good all the same, and its part of wordpress so it is SEO friendly.

I went for a custom script on Puppies and Dogs for sale in Ireland | Dogs.ie , it's not finished / polished yet. I found someone on rent a coder to programme it for me.

If you are OK with Joomla, you can use ListBingo or SOBI2 components.
