how do you put a $value on a social network or website?
what are the general guidlines?

0-5000 members
5-10,000 members
10-20,000 etc
up to 500,000

any advice would be great on how best to gauge this value,

thanks,

I know that some places put a value per member. This could be anything from $1 to $5, but it all depends on the niche. It also depends on whether the site has a current revenue model.

In the end of the day your site is only worth what people will pay for it. And this is normally based on the demand for these types of sites, presence and uniqueness.

It's not straight forward to calculate prices...

Member numbers are meaningless.
Active members might be a slightly more useful metric, but traffic etc., is probably a more reliable way of gauging a site's success / value

Depends on a lot more factors than just members.

Depends on Revenue per year, Profit, advertising potential, average unique visitors, target market(nimble.ie is aimed towards irish users and so will never expand past irish waters, so a european company isn't just going to spend millions on a social network that targets about 25% of 4million people, whereas bebo expands into a lot of the main english speaking countries, but yet again, bebo faces large competition).

The most expensive social network out there would be the one with the most *active* members, best advertising revenue, least competition, most profit, the one with most ability to squeeze out more profit with a bit of tweaking, and the one best able to scale and meet demand.

It all depends on traffic and revenue. You could have xx,xxx members that registered a while ago and never visited the site again.
A website value is traffic. The most traffic you get, the more $$$ you are likely to make if you properly monetize the website.

Active members (as suggested earlier in the thread), the demographic (age/social), the niche, the cost of advertising using the network's keywords/niche words, and any previous earnings.

What you meen - to pu a value per member? Are you selling email adresses for advertising? Are you selling people as a slaves :)

Good way to get traffic and money from social advertising networks is use some social advertising tool or web service like LongURL. With this web service you can use the power of newsgroups, forums, blogs, facebook, twitter...
