I always calculated my daily rate as hourly rate * 7. the 7 comes from 9 to 5 minus lunch hour. But recently, I've heard people talk about their calculations using 8 hours.

So, what's a standard day?

It depends if you get paid for lunch. Simple as that really. I should be on a 35 hour week but I get paid for 37 hours. However generally I do approx 5-10 hours OT per week so those figures fly out the window..

I get paid for 9 - 5:30 with an hour lunch which I never fully take.

I usually work an extra hour or two afterwards and also find myself catching up with work at strange hours of the night.

Well, as a freelancer working from home I charge a daily rate as 8 hours. This is because I usually only take 30-45 mins for lunch and work from 9 -6ish. I would generally do a minimum of 8 hours a day.

I charge an hourly fee; if I work 7 hours that's what I bill for, If I work 10 hours that's what I usually bill for.

I'm trying to keep work efforts within the '9 to 5' hours though, but that's seldom possible right now.
